July 3

July 3 – Here is a Timothy O’Sullivan photograph taken of John L. Burns after he had joined the Union troops to fight at Gettysburg, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was indeed the “Old Hero of Gettysburg”. Today July 3rd in 1863 was the third and final day of the battle between Union and Confederate forces. To commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg I am posting a scan of one side of an unmounted stereo print from Anthony’s Civil War series.
John L. Burns, the “Old Hero of Gettysburg” was a seventy-two year old cobbler who took up his gun to join the battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded on the third day of the battle.
